Did you know that 80% of the cost of lighting is not in the bulb, nor the fixture? It’s the electricity you will use over the life of the bulb that really adds up!
We’ve been advising businesses on how to select the right energy-saving technology for their work environment for more than 30 years. When we first started in St. George, the hot technology was compact fluorescents (CF), and for many styles of lamp, it still is. But to really see the savings afforded by both lower wattage AND longevity, you must invest in commercial-quality products, not the residential ones you find at discount stores. The longevity issue is also an often-overlooked way to save money, because if you are paying someone to change a light bulb (or dozens a week), then that labor expense directly affects your bottom line. A typical CF averages 8-15,000 hours, whereas the typical incandescent bulb averages 750-2,000 hrs. So if you run 24/7, you can expect to change your CF’s about every 12-15 months rather than every other month. So you are not only saving about 75% on the wattage (13 watts versus 60, for example), but you buy far fewer bulbs.
The hottest thing now are L.E.D.’s. We are constantly monitoring this amazing technology for quality, types, and pricing, and are selling them like hotcakes! People love the color choices, the cooler operating temperatures, the incredible long life, and the energy savings. Our best-selling Par 38 uses just 17 watts of power (replacing a 90 watt halogen), comes in 25 and 40 degree flood configurations, in a choice of 30K or 50K, and are rated 50,000 hrs (that’s about 5-8 years running 24/7).
